HAVS Tier 1-3

Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) is a condition which affects the nerves and blood vessels of a person’s hands.

It can cause vibration white finger, a permanent and painful numbness and tingling in the hands and arms, painful joints, muscle weakening, and there is evidence that it can cause carpel tunnel syndrome. The use of hand-held power tools and hand-guided equipment is the main cause of HAVS due to the transmission of vibrations into workers’ arms. The condition is severe and disabling, and once it develops, the damage is permanent. There is a duty on employers to control risks from exposure to vibration as required under The Control of Vibration at Work Regulations.
