Dermatology

The skin is the largest organ of the body and acts as a barrier to protect the internal organs from injury and bacteria. It is therefore important to carry out regular skin checks to help spot the early signs of dermatitis or other skin problems. This allows health effects to be detected early and can show whether an adequate standard of control is being maintained.  Tests are performed by a trained occupational health technician. Dermatology checks help employers meet their duties to assess and control the risks associated with hazardous substances as required under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH).

The following necessary information MUST be taken to the appointment:

• Current official photo ID e.g. driving licence / passport
• Details of all medication that is being taken regularly (a repeat prescription form is useful)

Unfortunately, if you attend your appointment without the necessary information; the appointment will have to be rearranged – this will incur an additional cost.

At the Appointment

Proof of ID will be requested before the tests commence.

The following tasks will then be performed:

• The employee will be asked to complete a questionnaire regarding their medical history, any existing skin conditions, the employee’s work environment, hazardous substances used and potential skin exposure conditions. 
• A physical inspection of the employee’s hands and arms will be undertaken to detect rashes, redness, dryness and other skin conditions.
• Information will be provided on potential risks, preventive measures, good skin hygiene practices and the types of symptoms that may indicate a problem.

If any abnormalities are detected, a referral will be made to an Occupational Health Physician or the employees GP.
