Drugs and Alcohol

This includes health and safety risks posed by employees who may be under the influence of alcohol or drugs whilst at work or who otherwise may be unfit to work through drug or alcohol misuse.

The following necessary information MUST be taken to the appointment:

• Current official photo ID e.g. driving licence / passport
• Details of all medication that is being taken regularly (a repeat prescription form is useful)

Unfortunately, if you attend your appointment without the necessary information; the appointment will have to be rearranged – this will incur an additional cost.

At the Appointment

Proof of ID will be requested before the tests commence. The following tasks will then be performed:

For Drug Urine Test

• The employee will be asked to complete a questionnaire regarding their general medical history
• The employee will be asked to sign a written consent form before the test is conducted.
• The test will be explained to the employee.
• The employee will be asked to empty their pockets onto the table, roll down their socks and remove their shoes.
• They will be escorted to the toilet area where they will be required to provide a urine sample.
• The occupational health technician will wait outside and escort the employee back to the room.
• Following the test; the employee will be provided with hand sanitiser.
• The paperwork will be completed.
• The employee will be required to stay in the room until the results have been checked.
• The test will be recorded as ‘negative’ or ‘non-negative’
• The employee will be asked to sign, write their name and the date on the bottom of the form.
• Where a ‘non-negative’ result is shown; the sample will be packaged in front of employee for sending to the laboratory for verification.

For Saliva Alcohol Test

• The employee will be asked to complete a questionnaire regarding their general medical history
• The employee will be asked to sign a written consent form before the test is conducted.
• The test will be explained to the employee.
• The occupational health technician will ask the employee if they have been nil by mouth for at least 10 minutes.
• The employee will be asked to open an alcohol strip test, remove the stick and place the end of the stick with the sponge facing down onto their tongue and keep it there.
• After approx. 3 minutes the stick will be removed and the results analysed.
• Following the test; the employee will be provided with hand sanitiser.
• The paperwork will be completed.
• The test will be recorded as ‘negative’ or ‘non-negative’
• The employee will be asked to sign, write their name and the date on the bottom of the form.
• Where a ‘non-negative’ result is shown; the sample will be packaged in front of employee for sending to the laboratory for verification.
